What is ‘The Diplomat’ About?
Directed by Shivam Nair and written by Ritesh Shah ‘The Diplomat’ is described as a 2025 Indian Hindi-language political action thriller. It weaves together personal sacrifice, geopolitical tension, and emotional depth. The film explores the psychological strain of diplomacy against a volatile backdrop and highlights the power of negotiation and intellect over violence and war.
John Abraham stars in the lead role as JP Singh, a skilled diplomat navigating a high-stakes mission. The film’s timely arrival on streaming has sparked fresh interest, especially as its plot echoes current events and delves into the human side of cross-border conflict and diplomacy.

Inspired by True Events
Interestingly, ‘The Diplomat’ draws inspiration from true events. Specifically, it is inspired by the true story of Uzma Ahmed, an Indian national who was rescued and repatriated from Pakistan in 2017 after a harrowing ordeal. Director Nair confirmed the film tells the story of Uzma, a woman from Delhi who went to Malaysia for work, got involved with a Pakistani individual, and ended up trapped in Pakistan.
More Than Just a Patriotic Film
John Abraham shared what compelled him to take on the role. He described ‘The Diplomat’ not merely as a patriotic narrative, but as an emotional, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller. He urged fans to view it from a “humanitarian angle”. Abraham likened the film’s tension and impact to the acclaimed film ‘Argo’, emphasising how the story grips the viewer from start to finish. He said, “You won’t move when you watch that film; you’ll just be glued to your seat. That feeling is what I got from The Diplomat”.
