A Stellar Opening Weekend
Aamir Khan’s latest cinematic offering, Sitaare Zameen Par, has proven to be a significant box office success, raking in an impressive Rs 66.65 crore in its opening weekend. This strong performance marks a positive shift for the actor, especially following the less-than-stellar performance of his previous film, Laal Singh Chaddha.
The film’s robust start has already secured its place as Aamir Khan’s 7th highest-grossing film in terms of Hindi net collections
Surpassing Previous Milestones
What makes Sitaare Zameen Par‘s box office achievement particularly noteworthy is its speed. Within just four days of its release, the film managed to surpass the lifetime collections of several significant films in Aamir Khan’s illustrious career. These include:
Taare Zameen Par (Rs 62.95 crore)
Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.12 crore)
Rang De Basanti (Rs 52.91 crore)
This rapid climb is especially interesting given that both Taare Zameen Par and Rang De Basanti are widely regarded as landmark films for their content and emotional impact.
Weekend Surge and Weekday Test
The film’s initial journey at the box office showcased remarkable growth over its opening weekend. After a decent start on Friday with Rs 10.7 crore, Sitaare Zameen Par saw a significant surge, collecting Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday, marking an impressive 88.79% jump. This momentum continued into Sunday, with the film earning Rs 27.25 crore, its highest single-day collection to date
However, the crucial Monday test saw collections drop to an estimated Rs 8.50 crore, representing an approximate 68.81% decline from Sunday. Despite this typical weekday dip, the film still managed to hold reasonably well, pushing its four-day total to Rs 66.65 crore and successfully crossing the ₹60 crore mark. On June 23rd, the film’s overall occupancy was 19.15%, with Delhi NCR and Mumbai showing the highest numbers of shows and occupancy.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that the film “hit it out of the park” in its opening weekend, driven by strong word-of-mouth and exceptional performance in urban center’s and high-end multiplexes.
A Story with Heart: Plot and Themes
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama film that center’s on Gulshan, a former star basketball coach portrayed by Aamir Khan. Following a DUI offence, Gulshan is ordered to coach a team of neurodivergent individuals as part of his community service.
What begins as a reluctant assignment evolves into a profound, life-changing experience for both Gulshan and his unique team. The film also stars Genelia D’Souza (Deshmukh) as Sunita, Gulshan’s supportive wife.
The film has been praised for its emotional depth and powerful storytelling, touching upon socially relevant themes. It offers a moving portrayal of the abilities, struggles, and dreams of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, aligning perfectly with a mission to promote inclusion in sports and society.
It’s also stirring major nostalgia, being considered a spiritual sequel to the 2007 gem Taare Zameen Par. News18 gave the film a 3.5 rating, commending its heartfelt and novel approach despite its lengthy runtime.
A Call for Tax-Free Status
Beyond its box office performance, Sitaare Zameen Par is making headlines for its significant social impact. The Elite Games Federation, a prominent sports NGO, has formally approached the Maharashtra government, specifically Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, requesting that the film be granted tax-free status in the state.
The NGO believes that making the film tax-free would allow it to reach more families, schools, and communities, thereby “spreading a vital message of empathy, accessibility, and acceptance”. This initiative underscores the film’s potential to amplify inclusion and create a meaningful impact through cinema.
What Lies Ahead?
While Sitaare Zameen Par has started strongly, it remains to be seen how high it will climb on Aamir Khan’s all-time highest-grossing films list, where Dangal (Rs 374.43 crore), PK (Rs 340.8 crore), and Dhoom 3 (Rs 271.07 crore) currently lead1. However, its initial success and the profound social message it conveys suggest that Sitaare Zameen Par is poised to leave a lasting impact, both commercially and culturally.
