The Long-Awaited Return of Death’s Design

After a 14-year wait, the iconic horror franchise Final Destination is back with its sixth instalment, titled Final Destination Bloodlines. The series, known for its chillingly simple premise that “you can never outrun death”, sees young people narrowly escape near only to be hunted down and killed in increasingly imaginative and often horrifying accidents.

The last film, Final Destination 5, was released in 20111. Now, directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, along with writers Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, aiming to deliver a sharp new edge to the concept without rewriting fate.

Box Office Bloodbath: Aiming for a Franchise Record

Final Destination Bloodlines is expected to make a significant impact at the box office. Distributed by Warner Bros. and New Line, the R-rated horror film is projected to debut with between $35 million and $45 million from 2,800 North American theatres. Adding its international prospects, the film is aiming for a global start of $70 million to $80 million from 74 overseas territories.

These projections suggest that Bloodlines is poised to land the biggest debut of the series, significantly surpassing the $18 million opening of Final Destination 5 in 2011 (not adjusted for inflation) and the previous franchise record of $27.4 million held by 2009’s The Final Destination. Some forecasts even suggest a domestic opening could be as high as $48M – $60M, potentially out grossing the lifetime domestic total of any previous film in the franchise. Horror is currently a strong genre at the box office, which bodes well for the film

A Deadly New Angle: Following the Bloodlines

The core concept of the Final Destination franchise remains intact: survival is only a temporary reprieve, as Death always collects its due. The tension for the audience lies in the morbid anticipation of how and when Death will strike. Final Destination Bloodlines introduces a new twist to the formula. The story, told through the eyes of high school student Stephanie Reyes, is plagued by disturbing dreams related to her grandmother, Iris.

The plot centers on a family beginning to die off because their matriarch was never meant to survive a horrific incident that occurred 50 years prior. Stephanie’s interference in Death’s plan puts her entire bloodline in jeopardy. The film explores this familial connection to the curse. The film had a production budget of roughly $50 million.

Critical Acclaim and Killer Set Pieces

Early reception for Final Destination Bloodlines has been positive, with critics expressing approval for the revival. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts a 93% critics score. Reviewers have noted that the film respects the roots of the franchise while giving it a sharp new edge. A franchise staple that remains strong is the creativity behind each kill, which is rooted in everyday life, turning ordinary moments into terrifying death traps.

The film reportedly features elaborate Rube Goldberg-style set pieces designed to kill off the ensemble cast one by one. While the tone is described as a little more campy this time, it surprisingly works, adding dark humor between the blood splatters.

The cast includes Kaitlyn Santa Juana as Stephanie and Gabrielle Rose as her grandmother Iris, among others like Richard Harmon, Brec Bassinger, and Tony Todd. Erik, played by Richard Harmon, stands out with his tattoos providing a “twisted canvas for maximum pain”. Technically, the film holds up well, with cinematography capturing the eerie nostalgia of the 1960s and the cold dread of the present

Dominating the Weekend Competition

Final Destination Bloodlines is expected to rule the box office in its opening weekend, significantly outpacing fellow newcomer The Weekend’s roman à clef thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow”. “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” a companion piece to Abel Tesfaye’s studio album, is projected to debut with a much lower $5 million to $7 million6. Final Destination Bloodlines is also anticipated to end the two-week reign of Marvel’s “Thunderbolts”.

“Thunderbolts” is projected to add $15 million to $18 million in its third weekend, having grossed $127.7 million domestically and $271 million globally to date. While “Thunderbolts” cost significantly more to produce ($180 million) than Final Destination Bloodlines ($50 million), it is struggling to get out of the red in its theatrical run.

Bloodlines is drawing a “bloodline in the sand” for other films, including the Warner Bros. horror hit “Sinners,” which is expected to hold strong in its fifth weekend with a projected $10M – $14M9.

Warner Bros.’ Winning Streak Continues

Based on box office projections, “Final Destination Bloodlines” is set to become the third consecutive hit for Warner Bros., following recent successes like “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie”. This marks a turning point for the studio after a string of commercial disappointments such as “Mickey 17,” “The Alto Knights,” and “Joker: Folie à Deux”.

With “Sinners” having generated $125 million domestically and $69 million internationally, and “A Minecraft Movie” earning $408 million in North America and $501 million overseas, Warner Bros. could impressively have three films in the top five this weekend9. Despite these individual successes, overall box office revenues are still trailing behind 2019 by roughly 33%.

Prepare to Face Your Fate (and See the Movie!)

Final Destination Bloodlines brings back the fear, the fun, and the familiar feeling that no one is safe, making it a must-see for long-time fans of the franchise2. It offers creative kills, a solid story hook centered on lineage, and a chilling reminder that cheating Death is a temporary solution2. With strong box office predictions and positive early reviews, this return to the series seems set to revitalize the property.
